A fledgling not-for-profit group has appeared at the water's edge of White Lake.

A small group met in late summer 2023 to discuss creating a formal organization. These individuals wanted to educate about the area, and work with other individuals and groups to promote and conserve the natural resources.

They included year-round residents as well as people who have White Lake as a second home. This group has a diverse background as educators, administrators, attorneys, scientist, conservationist, environmentalist, writers, business men and women. Their differences stop when it comes to their love of White Lake. All of the people in the group have spent much of their lives, and almost all of their summers, enjoying White Lake.

Here are a few of their ideas:

  • Create an awareness of nature; perhaps nature trails

  • Work towards preservation of flora and fauna natural to the area

  • Create an appreciation of the area from those visiting as well as those who call White Lake home.

  • Possibly apply for grant monies

  • Partner with the Town of White Lake towards jointly chosen missions/projects

They have succeeded in becoming a Not-for-Profit Corporation with the State of North Carolina. The Steering Committee approved Mission Statement and Draft of By-Laws. The group is in the process of receiving a 501(c)3 status. And lastly, they have scheduled a General Membership Meeting for Fall of 2024.

Their goals for the future

  • Grow membership to at least 50 members

  • Create a history/anthology of White Lake

  • Create a natural history record of White Lake and the Bay area

  • Create a museum-type space for photographs and history

  • Offer a week-long camp for children to learn about White Lake, its history, and the natural inhabitants, both plant and animal, of the area

Their most immediate goal is to grow in numbers. White Lake Friends,INC would love to call you one of the crowd. If you are interested in learning more about this group, please provide us with an email address.
